Salts and Radiation Products on the Surface of Europa

چکیده

The surface of Europa could contain the compositional imprint of a underlying interior ocean, but competing hypotheses differ over whether spectral observations from the Galileo spacecraft show the signature of ocean evaporates or simply surface radiation products unrelated to the interior. Using adaptive optics at the W.M. Keck Observatory, we have obtained spatially resolved spectra of most of the disk of Europa at a spectral resolution ∼ 40 times higher than seen by the Galileo spacecraft. These spectra show a previously undetected distinct signature of magnesium sulfate salts on Europa, but the magnesium sulfate is confined to the trailing hemisphere and spatially correlated with the presence of radiation products like sulfuric acid and SO2. On the leading, less irradiated, hemisphere, our observations rule out the presence of many of the proposed sulfate salts, but do show the presence of distorted water ice bands. Based on the association of the potential MgSO4 detection on the trailing side with other radiation products, we conclude that MgSO4 is also a radiation product, rather than a constituent of a Europa ocean brine. Based on ocean chemistry models, we hypothesize that, prior to irradiation, magnesium is primarily in the form of MgCl2, and we predict that NaCl and KCl are even more abundant, and, in fact, dominate the non-ice component of the leading hemisphere. We propose observational tests of this new hypothesis. Subject headings: Planets and satellites: Europa – Planets and satellites: composition – Planets and satellites: surfaces

Science potential from a Europa lander.

The prospect of a future soft landing on the surface of Europa is enticing, as it would create science opportunities that could not be achieved through flyby or orbital remote sensing, with direct relevance to Europa's potential habitability. Here, we summarize the science of a Europa lander concept, as developed by our NASA-commissioned Science Definition Team. The science concept concentrates...

Compositional Gradients of Anti-jovian Surface Units on Europa from Despiked

Introduction: Knowledge of Europa's surface materials provides a window into the deep interior and informs our understanding of the subsurface ocean and its habitability. Differences in composition between surface features provide information about the crustal evolution. We report here preliminary compositional results indicating the existence of abundance gradients of hydrated sulfuric acid an...

Spectral Properties of Hydrated Salts at Low Temperature: Implications for Europa Mission Spectrometer Design

Introduction: Knowledge of the surface composition of Europa is critical for modeling of surface and interior processes and especially for evaluation of astrobiological potential [1]. While much information has been derived from the Galileo NIMS investigation, some breakthroughs have created more questions than answers. Any future Europa mission will attempt to capitalize on lessons learned fro...

Composition and stability of salts on the surface of Europa and their oceanic origin

We present theoretical models of the composition, the relative abundances, and the stability of hydrated salts on the surface and in the icy shell of Jupiter’s satellite Europa and discuss whether those salts have an oceanic origin. The evaluations were done with thermodynamic calculations of (1) salt dehydration equilibria at the conditions of the surface of Europa and its icy shell, (2) chemi...

Potassium in Europa’s Atmosphere

Trace element abundances in the sputtered extended atmospheres of the Galilean satellites reflect the surface abundances of these trace elements and can thus serve as signatures of surface processes on these satellites. We have measured sodium and potassium abundances in the extended atmospheres of Europa and Io, and derive sodium-to-potassium ratios of 25 ± 2 and 10 ± 3. The large difference b...
